Nobody in the history of computing ever said, "Wow, I love this 2-minute wait between pressing the power button and actually using my machine!
You can tweak Windows so it boots faster, of course. For instance, you can install more RAM, reduce the number of startup programs, and optimize your Registry. This motherboard-hosted area of your PC controls what happens the moment you press the power button.
And with a few simple changes, you may be able to cajole your system into starting a little quicker--maybe even a lot quicker. Before we get started, let me issue a few warnings. First, monkeying with the BIOS can have unintended and undesirable results.
If you aren't terribly tech-savvy, you might want to steer clear. Though you're unlikely to inflict any permanent harm on your system, changing the wrong setting could leave you with a PC that doesn't boot properly. Second, before you change any individual setting, note its current state so you can restore it if necessary. Since there's no easy way to capture a screenshot of a BIOS screen, consider taking a photo with your camera or jotting down the setting on paper.
Finally, your after-tuneup mileage is impossible to predict. Some of the options listed here might not be available on your system, and your system might have options in addition to these. If your machine is more than a year old, chances are good that you can find an updated BIOS for it. Motherboard manufacturers often issue updates to solve problems, update features, and improve system performance.
To find out whether an update exists for your system, start with the vendor's support page--especially if you bought the PC from a company like Dell or HP. If new BIOS firmware appears on the downloads list for your system, the vendor probably has tested and approved it.
Alternatively, if you know the make and the model number of your motherboard, you can check the manufacturer's Website for updates. Whatever you do, be sure to follow the installation instructions to the letter. The process of "flashing" that is, updating a BIOS usually goes off without a hitch, but if you do it improperly or if you try to install the wrong updateyou could ruin your PC. By saving the operating system state to a hibernation file, it can make your computer boot up even faster, saving valuable seconds every time you turn your machine on. Fast Startup combines elements of a cold shutdown and the hibernate feature.
When you shut down your computer with Fast Startup enabled, Windows closes all applications and logs off all users, just as in a normal cold shutdown. When you start the computer again, Windows does not have to reload the kernel, drivers, and system state individually. Instead, it just refreshes your RAM with the loaded image from the hibernation file and delivers you to the login screen. This technique can shave considerable time off your start up. When you put your computer into hibernation mode, it also saves open folders and applications, as well as currently logged in users.

Ultra fast boot, unable to enter bios. Thread starter krazykonr Start date Oct 1, Sidebar Sidebar. Forums Hardware Motherboards. To change your boot order, set a system password, disable ports or built-in peripherals, or even to overclock, you may need to go into the BIOS menus.
When you first power-on a computer, it goes through a very quick POST power on self test. However, some computers go through POST so fast that they don't recognize input from the keyboard in time for you to a hit key.
For those, skip to method 2 below. For example, hitting F2 might work on an Asus, you'll need F10 on an Acer computer. If you don't know the hotkey for your computer, you can look and see if a message comes up during POST, telling you what key to press or you can try hitting one of the 12 function keys, the DEL key, the Enter key or the ESC key since it is always one of those. You may have to try a few times to determine which one it is. In our research, DEL and F2 were, by far, the most common.
Here's a list of common BIOS keys by brand. Depending on the age of your model, the key may be different. Unfortunately, some computers go through POST so quickly that there's no time to hit a key.
If you're running a modern version of Linux such as Ubuntu, you may be able to get to the BIOS by typing "sudo systemctl reboot --firmware" at the command prompt. If your computer can't load an operating system, because it doesn't detect a bootable drive, it will usually pause, beep and give you the option to enter the BIOS, which it will often call "setup.
However, the biggest problems occur when the system POSTs too fast for you to hit a key and then Windows or Linux tries to boot and fails. I've had this problem when I had a missing or corrupted bootloader, I got the Windows splash screen and then a blue screen of death. To force the BIOS to appear under these circumstances, you can try using an emergency boot disk, provided that you can either select a boot device at startup or your computer has set an external USB drive as a higher boot priority than its internal storage drive s.
You can use a Windows 10 install disk as an emergency boot disk. Finally, if you can't boot off of an emergency disk, you can try to cause a system halting error that would prevent your computer from attempting to boot off of its internal drives. Then, you'll be given the option to enter the BIOS menu. Many desktop computers will give an error message if there's no keyboard plugged in if you need help finding one, check our out Best Gaming Keyboards list or if the keyboard buffer is overloaded from holding down too many keys at start.
Pulling out your primary internal storage drive would also cause an error that would let you into the BIOS, but if that drive has a non-booting OS on it, your problems might resume once you plug it back in. Whatever method you use to access your BIOS, be careful when making changes to your settings there.
You could end up disabling key components. Navigate to Settings. Select Recovery in the left pane. Click Restart now under the Advanced startup header. Your computer will reboot. Click Troubleshoot. Click Advanced options. Click Restart to confirm.
